It as just 175 years ago today, March 3, 1847 when Congress passed the Post Office Act of 1847, authorizing the Post Office to print the very first American stamps. Now, for those of you fellow Philatelists, (Philately is the art of collecting stamps), this is one of our celebrated Holidays. Finally, America would soon have its own printed in America stamps.
It is interesting to note that for years, these stamps were neither perforated, which means you had to cut them out yourself, and did not have any glue, or gummy backing to them either, yes, you ladies and gentlemen had to do that all by yourself. Our first printed stamps would not arrive until July 1, 1847, and were the 5¢ Benjamin Franklin and 10¢ George Washington. If you find these stamps in your collection, allow me to verify their authenticity, you know, just in case. 175 years ago today, American stamps got the “stamp of approval” to be made, see what I did there, it’s a pun.
What was happening yesterday, on March 2nd?
