At the opening ceremony, which will be held on 25th July 1992 at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, Israeli athletes will march along-side sports' representatives of 167 countries. This will be the 25th event of its kind since the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. The Olympic Games aim to create peace and unity amongst sportsmen and their countries from around the world, but the Olympics are also a reminder of the "Bloody Olympics" of Munich 1972 when 11 of the best Israeli athletes were massacred by Arab terrorists. The innocent victims were murdered for the sole reason that they were Israeli and Jewish and the Olympic flag was profaned with their blood.

1992 commemorates 500 years since the expulsion of the Jewish people from Spain and the Israeli sports team will bring a special message from the State of Israel to the Jewish community in Barcelona and in Spain at this significant time. With this historical background in mind, it is important to note the current strengthening of relations between Israel and Spain.

The Olympic Games for the Disabled, at which Israel is known for her outstanding achievements, will be held shortly after the Olympic Games, also in Barcelona.

Immigration absorption in Israel will be expressed at the Games by new immigrant athletes who will be part of the Israeli team. 1992 will be a significant year for world politics and world sport. Western European countries will demonstrate their economic union and this will have far-reaching importance on the world. Of special interest will be that German athletes from the West and the East will march together at the Games raising the same flag.

The developments that have taken place in the USSR in the last year will also be reflected in the make-up of their Olympic delegation.

The preparations for the Barcelona Olympic Games are almost complete and the athletes are on their way. The sports arena is one of the largest in the world and the media is set up to broadcast the events to 2 billion spectators around the globe. The Israeli Olympic team will do its best to reach the highest goals and a honoured to represent Israel at what will be a very exciting event.
