International folklore festivals have attained notable popularity all over the world. Seven festivals have been held in Israel with the participation of over 3000 dancers, singers and musicians from 27 countries.

The International Folklore Festival, the only official festival of its kind in Israel, is held under the patronage of the State of Israel, the Haifa Municipality and the CIOFF (World Organization for Festivals and the Arts).

The City of Haifa, endowed with great natural beauty, is an obvious base for such a festival and it is from there that the participants will set out to perform all over Israel.

The objectives of the folklore festival are to provide a meeting-point for nationalities and cultures, to share knowledge of their folklore, to introduce them to the land of Israel, its people and its natural beauty, and to create bonds of friendship between speakers of different languages.

The Festival comprises a variety of spectacular events, starting with the ceremonial opening, when all the participants will display their talents in song and music in the presence of members of the Israel Government and distinguished guests from overseas.

The festival opening ceremony will be matched by the closing ceremony when the CIOFF flag is handed over for safekeeping until the next festival.

The main event is the parade of the dancers, singers and musicians through the main streets of the city, in which thousands of dancers from Israel, and guests, take part. Orchestras and choirs join in the two-hour parade which will be watched by about 100,000 spectators. There will not only be performances in indoor halls but the .groups will also appear in the various neighbourhoods of Haifa.

This year, 12 countries including groups from Central and Eastern Europe, South America, Asia and Africa, will be represented.

The 8th Festival which is to be held from August 4-12, 1990, marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the CIOFF and will be the culminating event in a series of worldwide festivals.

A new dimension is to be added to the dance festival - concerts of national folkmusic. Three concerts are to be performed by 12 folk-orchestras, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra and the Haifa Youth Orchestra.

During their stay, the participants will tour Israel, performing in Jerusalem and the north and getting to know the land and its people.
