The 11th "Hapoel" Games to be held in May 1979 will continue the tradition of holding these Games every four years. As in the past, the 1979 Hapoel Games will illustrate the kaleidoscopic activities of Hapoel, the sports organisation of the Histadrut, the General Federation of Labour in Israel.

Hapoel is by far the largest sports organisation in Israel, embracing 1183 branches from the Golan Heights in the north to Ophira (Sharm El-Sheikh) in the south. Over 250,000 men and women, boys and girls, are active in Hapoel sports in national, regional and workplace leagues, and in mass participation sports. Hapoel places special emphasis on participation in sport, and in the past year organised more than 40 popular events, including cross-country races, long distance marches, lake swimming and sports at camping sites. Hapoel has been eminently successful in giving meaning to its Hebrew motto - "develop sports for the masses and champions from among them." The 11th Hapoel Games will be a highlight of Israel's 31st Anniversary celebrations. They will give citizens the chance to enjoy sport as part of the national holiday.

The Games will be divided into four major parts: international competitions; official (GSIT) workers' sports competitions; spectacular displays, and mass participation events throughout Israel, The CSIT competitions will be in tennis, table tennis, wrestling and gymnastics.

The Opening Ceremony on May 2 will be a colourful spectacle of movement in which over 1,000 athletes from 24 countries will join Israeli sportsmen and youth. It will be staged at the Hapoel "Bloomfield" Stadium in Jaffa in the presence of President Yitzhak Navon.

The Closing Ceremony on May 8 will feature a varied display of folk dancing and gymnastics performed by outstanding international troupes, In addition to the competitive events with the participation of Olympic medal winners and world record holders, the Games will have the added attraction of a display of mass callisthenics by floodlight, and folk dancing. Folklore evenings and gymnastics will be held at 16 locations throughout the country with the participation of groups from Israel and overseas, A large turnout of spectators is expected to view the Games, whilst at the same time Hapoel will organise popular sports events at workplaces and 40 holiday villages and camping grounds all over the country.
