In 1953 Israel sponsored its first major exhibition as an independent state. The Conquest of the Desert International Exhibition and Fair was dedicated to the reclamation and population of desert regions. Held at the Jerusalem Convention Center, it attracted over 500,00 people. Participants included UNESCO and the World Health Organization as well as Israel government ministries, the Jewish National Fund, and many organizations and companies from Israel and 21 foreign countries.
